What To Compare When You Look At Plans
Prescription drug coverage: Check that each of your prescriptions is on the plan’s drug list (formulary), what tier it’s on, and which pharmacies are in the network. Drug lists can change every year.
Dental, vision & hearing: Coverage for these varies a lot from plan to plan. Look at what’s included, any yearly limits, and which dentists and eye doctors you can use.
Keeping your doctors: Check that your doctors and hospitals are in the plan’s network. HMO plans usually require you to use the network and get referrals; PPO plans let you go out of network, usually at a higher cost.
Fitness & OTC extras: Not every plan offers these, amounts vary, and some are only for people who meet certain conditions. Check what’s actually included before choosing a plan for an extra.
Compare each plan’s total yearly costs, whether your doctors are in the network, and how your prescriptions are covered.
Good To Know
Plans can change every year, so review the Annual Notice of Change your plan sends each fall. You can change plans from October 15 to December 7, and from January 1 to March 31 you can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or go back to Original Medicare once.
If you switch from a Medicare Supplement to Medicare Advantage, you may not be able to get your Medicare Supplement back later without answering health questions, except in certain situations. Ask about this before making a change.
Medicare Advantage is one way to get your Medicare coverage. Another is keeping Original Medicare and adding a Medicare Supplement and a drug plan. A licensed agent can compare both paths with you.
You need Medicare Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Our Initial Enrollment Period calculator shows your sign-up dates. See My Enrollment Dates
Your red, white, and blue Medicare card and any card or letters from your plan will show what you have. A licensed agent can help you figure it out.
Medicare Advantage isn’t the only choice. Original Medicare, on its own or with a Medicare Supplement and a drug plan, is the other path, and the right one depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and how you like to get care. See Medicare Advantage And Medicare Supplement Side By Side
